Politicians say it is cheap and humane
Politicians in the state of Oklahoma have come up with a new and
largely untested way to execute death row prisoners – asphyxiation
with nitrogen.

After the US Supreme Court put on hold the execution of three inmates
due killed by lethal injection and amid an ongoing struggle to obtain
the drugs used in the injection, politicians voted overwhelmingly to
allow nitrogen be used.

State Representative Mike Christian, a Republican who sponsored the
bill, claimed the process would be both painless for inmates and
affordable for Oklahoma.

The cheapest method would be to simply seal the chamber airtight and let
nature take its course, with speed governed largely by the capacity of
the chamber. But it could be a very slow business.

I don't have the comparative cost figures (let me stress that), but
evacuating a chamber completely in order to create a vacuum is
difficult. It may well be cheaper to replace the ground-level atmosphere
with nitrogen. The chamber needn't be able to withstand the forces of
the atmosphere pressing in on an evacuated vessel for a start.

I have thought in the past that displacing oxygen with nitrogen would be
such a painless way to go. The body wouldn't react to the lack of
oxygen, apart from inducing coma. And less stressful for those involved.

When an animal is put to sleep, the process is peaceful and quick, just
a single syringe and in moments the job is done. The cost is low too.
I don't see why putting a human to death should be so much different or
more expensive.

I agree. When I had to have my dog put down, I had the vet in to do it at
home. She had a small sedative injection because she was nervous of the
strangers and then the syringe. She floated off with no distress at all.
Surely that is more humane.

I was told but can't verify it that with an animal an overdose of
barbiturate is injected. If true it would explain why it is so peaceful.

etorphine hydrochloride, pentobarbital or sodium thiopental are
usaully the drugs of choice. depending on the animal, larger animals
usally etorphine hydrochloride, however this drug is highly dangerous
ad should only be administered by vet, plus before administering it the
antidote should be available and drawn in a syringe

Politicians say it is cheap and humane
Politicians in the state of Oklahoma have come up with a new and
largely untested way to execute death row prisoners – asphyxiation
with nitrogen.
After the US Supreme Court put on hold the execution of three inmates
due killed by lethal injection and amid an ongoing struggle to obtain
the drugs used in the injection, politicians voted
overwhelmingly to
allow nitrogen be used.
State Representative Mike Christian, a Republican who sponsored the
bill, claimed the process would be both painless for inmates and
affordable for Oklahoma.
Suffocation by vacuum would do the same job, quicker and most
importantly far cheaper.
The cheapest method would be to simply seal the chamber airtight and let
nature take its course, with speed governed largely by the capacity of
the chamber. But it could be a very slow business.
The increases CO2 would make the experience very distressing and
uncomfortable, and take a very long time.
Oh dear, the hardened criminal is uncomfortable. SO!?

I don't have the comparative cost figures (let me stress that), but
evacuating a chamber completely in order to create a vacuum is
difficult. It may well be cheaper to replace the ground-level atmosphere
with nitrogen. The chamber needn't be able to withstand the forces of
the atmosphere pressing in on an evacuated vessel for a start.
Again partial evacuation would take a long time.
I have thought in the past that displacing oxygen with nitrogen would be
such a painless way to go. The body wouldn't react to the lack of
oxygen, apart from inducing coma. And less stressful for those involved.
Wouldn't you panic and be very short of breath, like getting trapped
underwater?
No, shortness of breath is caused by an increase in CO2, not a decrease
in O2.
I don't believe you.

In fact why not trap people underwater?
Because people would hold their breath, which would cause panic, and
some would die from dry drowning in which the bronchia spasm and close.
But they'd die right? Which is the purpose of the exercise.
If that's what floats your boat.
The hint is in the word "execution".

Breathing is unusual in that it's under both autonomic and conscious
control. That doesn't happen with other physiological systems like
digestion or hormonal response (which are strictly autonomic) or
locomotion (which is strictly conscious). Tuffy is saying that the
dizziness from lack of oxygen would induce you to consciously (i.e., not
reflexively) breathe harder. I find no basis for such an assertion.

I used to do a lot of SCUBA diving including closed circuit
rebreathers. It's very well known in this world that providing you can
remove the CO2, lack of oxygen which implys an excess of nitrogen
(or helium) causes you to simply drift off with a pleasant warm
feeling...

The warm, pleasant drift off is the the generally accepted view, and
confirmed to me from speaking first-hand to a friend who was successfully
resuscitated from such a situation. Also a few years ago a friend of
mine (also a diver) decided to end his life and his chosen way was to
breathe pure helium.

There are numerous articles online about the mechanisms that make CO2 the
primary trigger to breathe and not lack of oxygen.

ffs - can you not read?

Perhaps you could give it a try - and report back.

Or not.

Politicians say it is cheap and humane
Politicians in the state of Oklahoma have come up with a new and
largely untested way to execute death row prisoners –
asphyxiation
with nitrogen.
After the US Supreme Court put on hold the execution of three
inmates
due killed by lethal injection and amid an ongoing
struggle to
obtain
the drugs used in the injection, politicians voted
overwhelmingly to
allow nitrogen be used.
State Representative Mike Christian, a Republican who
sponsored
the
bill, claimed the process would be both painless for inmates and
affordable for Oklahoma.
Suffocation by vacuum would do the same job, quicker and most
importantly far cheaper.
The cheapest method would be to simply seal the chamber
airtight
and let
nature take its course, with speed governed largely by the
capacity of
the chamber. But it could be a very slow business.
The increases CO2 would make the experience very distressing and
uncomfortable, and take a very long time.
Oh dear, the hardened criminal is uncomfortable. SO!?

I don't have the comparative cost figures (let me stress that), but
evacuating a chamber completely in order to create a vacuum is
difficult. It may well be cheaper to replace the ground-level
atmosphere
with nitrogen. The chamber needn't be able to withstand the forces of
the atmosphere pressing in on an evacuated vessel for a start.
Again partial evacuation would take a long time.
I have thought in the past that displacing oxygen with nitrogen
would be
such a painless way to go. The body wouldn't react to the lack of
oxygen, apart from inducing coma. And less stressful for those
involved.
Wouldn't you panic and be very short of breath, like getting trapped
underwater?
No, shortness of breath is caused by an increase in CO2, not a decrease
in O2.
I don't believe you.

If we have insufficient oxygen, we'd try harder to breath.
Breathing harder in this case is a reflex triggered by the CO2 level in
the blood.
Lack of oxygen and you'd want to breath, consciously or not.
Ignorance shows. Lack of oxygen without the corresponding increase in
CO2 just produces dizziness, unconsciousness and finally death. Its a
pleasant way to go. You should try it one day?
You might not automatically breathe more, but unless you're a complete
moron, you'd know why you were feeling dizzy and breathe harder. Don't
you have the ability to think for yourself?
When you're dizzy and faintheaded, there is no reflex to breathe faster.
Intelligence?
From you, the poster boy for Dunning Kruger syndrome?

Er, no.

Politicians say it is cheap and humane
Politicians in the state of Oklahoma have come up with a new and
largely untested way to execute death row prisoners –
asphyxiation
with nitrogen.
After the US Supreme Court put on hold the execution of three
inmates
due killed by lethal injection and amid an ongoing struggle to
obtain
the drugs used in the injection, politicians voted
overwhelmingly to
allow nitrogen be used.
State Representative Mike Christian, a Republican who
sponsored
the
bill, claimed the process would be both painless for inmates and
affordable for Oklahoma.
Suffocation by vacuum would do the same job, quicker and most
importantly far cheaper.
The cheapest method would be to simply seal the chamber airtight
and let
nature take its course, with speed governed largely by the
capacity of
the chamber.

Why? I've had vertigo. It didn't make me want to breathe harder.
Because you knew it wasn't from lack of oxygen.

In fact why not trap people underwater?
Because people would hold their breath, which would cause panic, and
some would die from dry drowning in which the bronchia spasm and close.
But they'd die right? Which is the purpose of the exercise.
If that's what floats your boat.
The hint is in the word "execution".
Another is that we, well most of us, live in a civilised world and act
accordingly.
If they're going to be dead within 10 minutes, it doesn't matter how
they get there. Being civilised to those who will remain alive for
years to come is one thing, but a criminal who is about to be dead,
what's the point?
Given human performance, if you can't get the point about not handing
the state the power to kill its citizens, then so be it.
We're not discussing IF they should kill their citizens, we're
discussing HOW they kill them.
These are not separable. Unless you're a sociopath.
I think you've hit the nail on its head.

Politicians say it is cheap and humane
Politicians in the state of Oklahoma have come up with a
new and
largely untested way to execute death row prisoners –
asphyxiation
with nitrogen.
After the US Supreme Court put on hold the execution of
three
inmates
due killed by lethal injection and amid an ongoing
struggle to
obtain
the drugs used in the injection, politicians voted
overwhelmingly to
allow nitrogen be used.
State Representative Mike Christian, a Republican who
sponsored
the
bill, claimed the process would be both painless for
inmates and
affordable for Oklahoma.
SO!?

I don't have the comparative cost figures (let me stress
that),
but
evacuating a chamber completely in order to create a vacuum is
difficult. It may well be cheaper to replace the
ground-level
atmosphere
with nitrogen. The chamber needn't be able to withstand the
forces of
the atmosphere pressing in on an evacuated vessel for a start.
Again partial evacuation would take a long time.
I have thought in the past that displacing oxygen with nitrogen
would be
such a painless way to go. The body wouldn't react to the lack of
oxygen, apart from inducing coma. And less stressful for those
involved.
Wouldn't you panic and be very short of breath, like getting
trapped
underwater?
No, shortness of breath is caused by an increase in CO2, not a
decrease

Why? I've had vertigo. It didn't make me want to breathe harder.
Because you knew it wasn't from lack of oxygen.

In fact why not trap people underwater?
Because people would hold their breath, which would cause
panic,
and
some would die from dry drowning in which the bronchia spasm
and
close.
Given human performance, if you can't get the point about not handing
the state the power to kill its citizens, then so be it.

some would die from dry drowning in which the bronchia spasm
and
close.
But they'd die right? Which is the purpose of the exercise.
If that's what floats your boat.
The hint is in the word "execution".
Another is that we, well most of us, live in a civilised world
and
act
accordingly.
What utter bollocks. Killing an innocent person in a "nice" way is
almost as bad as killing them in a humane way. They're both murder. If
they're guilty, who gives a fuck?
Most civilised people do. It's a way of saying I'm civilised even if
you're not; now pay the price for your crime.
Only a sociopath wouldn't be able to see this.
So no reason then, just following the pack.
Nope, no pack, just you in denial of being a socipath.
You've still not given a reason. You just say everyone else does it
that way.
The reason has already been given. It's a way of saying I'm civilised
rather than behaving like a sociopathic animal.

The fact you still can't see the answer speaks volumes and confirms you
are a sociopath.

Suffocation by vacuum would do the same job, quicker and most
importantly far cheaper.
The cheapest method would be to simply seal the chamber

nature take its course, with speed governed largely by the

The increases CO2 would make the experience very distressing and
uncomfortable, and take a very long time.

I don't have the comparative cost figures (let me stress

but
evacuating a chamber completely in order to create a vacuum is
difficult. It may well be cheaper to replace the
ground-level
atmosphere
with nitrogen. The chamber needn't be able to withstand the
forces of
the atmosphere pressing in on an evacuated vessel for a start.
Again partial evacuation would take a long time.
I have thought in the past that displacing oxygen with nitrogen

such a painless way to go. The body wouldn't react to the lack of
oxygen, apart from inducing coma. And less stressful for those

Why? I've had vertigo. It didn't make me want to breathe harder.
Because you knew it wasn't from lack of oxygen.

Eventually we're all dead anyway, so no one will care how we act.

As I said, sociopath.

That is not borne out by the numbers of workers each year who become
unconscious and/or die after entering confined spaces without checking
for sufficient oxygen levels. They have the ability to get out but they
don't realise there is a problem until they become unconscious.

If we have insufficient oxygen, we'd try harder to breath.
Breathing harder in this case is a reflex triggered by the CO2 level in
the blood.
Lack of oxygen and you'd want to breath, consciously or not.

In fact why not trap people underwater?
Because people would hold their breath, which would cause panic, and
some would die from dry drowning in which the bronchia spasm and close.
But they'd die right? Which is the purpose of the exercise.
If that's what floats your boat.
The hint is in the word "execution".
Here's another hint: the words, often unspoken, that follow the word
"execution": "of the innocent." The stench of those three words clings
to the word "execution" like the smell of burning flesh at a botched
electrocution.

If you can't smell it, so be it.

If gloating about handing the state the power to kill its citizens
floats your boat, then so be that as well.

Give them an execution fit for a murderer, rapist, terrorist, or whatever
they got the death sentence for:

Stuff the prisoner like a turkey. Give them 5 kg of morphine and
5 kg of cocaine (or whatever drugs they got caught with, whichever
is more) orally, then put them in a coffin and nail it shut.
